[John's spinning the doohickey between his fingers when Finn busts down (or walks through) the door. He's turned it on already, in his attempt to find out what the doohickey is and who it belongs to. One of his, or another unit using the facility before them. The picture doesn't help.
He knows Chyler went to an academy, with students her own age, some of whose tags she's still keeping, but FN-2003 is too old to be one of her class. John knows less about Finn, and he hasn't asked. The boy's cagey enough as it is. When Finn wants to talk, he'll talk. John's in no rush to scratch deeper than the surface. Not when it might hurt.
